When it is cold outside, we enjoy sitting by the best Florida fire pit. Most of us live in Florida because of the weather. The cool evenings we enjoy in the winter is the perfect opportunity to sit next to a warm fire. When shopping online or at the big box stores, no doubt you see many different types of fire pits. We are going take a few minutes to discuss the different types and what might be best for you and what makes the best Florida fire pit.
Is There A Best Florida Fire Pit?
I guess that would depend on who you ask. Then again, depending on where your home is located, that too could impact your choice. So let’s go through them.
Propane Fire Pit
Some would argue propane makes the best Florida fire pit. These are the cleanest burning and have some of the sleekest designs. No smoke and no finding or buying wood. With the click of a button these fire pits can really add a classy and warm touch to your backyard. Some are designed and integrated into tables, walls and some are tall and are almost torch like.
There are many options for these fire pits including lava stone, glass and even water. Just make sure you have plenty of propane. These are great for small back yards where a traditional pit in the ground doesn’t work. If you or your guests are allergy sufferers, then clean burning propane may be the way to go.
Open Fire Pit
These traditional pits were dug slightly in the ground and have stones or bricks around the outside. You’ll need to have a stack of wood nearby that is dry and seasoned. There is nothing like the smell of a real fire. Perhaps it brings back memories of camping or making s’mores. These fire pits are great for cooking anything you can put on a stick. You need to have a yard large enough so it can be placed away from your home. You don’t want hot embers landing on your roof of your house.
If you are interested in having a brick fire pit in your yard, let us know. We can help design one to work with your current patio, or design it into a new patio. There are many different styles including ground level and even raised.
Chiminea Fire Pits
So when you want a real fire, but you don’t have room for a fire pit in your yard, you do have another option. A Chiminea! You might not know the name, but you have seen them around. They look like a little pot belly stove but made out of pottery or terracotta. These portable fire pits are originally from Mexico and the Southwest US. These little stoves have a chimney that helps create really good air flow. In as little as 15 minutes you can have a really hot and warm fire.
They look great when not in use, and really help you enjoy a fire in a small place. Traditionally there was some cooking that was completed in these stoves. If you choose to use some really nice aromatic woods like cedar, hickory or mesquite wood you will love the smell. Just remember they are made of pottery, so they should not be left out in the rains uncovered for any length of time or the pottery may crack.
Metal Fire Pits
Finally there are some metal fire pits available that can also be placed on a patio. These may include a cover to keep embers from flying away. Some are designed to be smokeless with special vents. Usually these fire pits are not your best Florida fire pit option. Cheaper construction leads to rusting and failure after a season or two. However this is a good way to get your foot in the door to see if an outdoor fire pit is right for your family before investing in a really nice set up.
As with any open fire around your home you must be careful. You should always have a fire extinguisher nearby and never leave a fire unattended. Check the winds before you start your fire to make sure the smoke will not enter your home or blow toward your family. Generally you don’t have to have fires when it’s windy outside.
