Whether you have a vegetable garden, a flower garden, or you simply love your lawn, one of the most frustrating things is to have a problem with weeds. But the good news is that there are things that you can do to help you with preventing weeds, and chances are that you have at least one of these items in your home.
1. Newspaper
If you have weeds, one of the best choices that you can make for killing them is newspaper. This will block oxygen and sunlight from getting to the soil, will smother the weeds that have sprouted already and stop any new weeds from growing. You should put down layer of 10 sheets and then you should wet it so that it’s held down, and then cover it with 1-2 inches of mulch. If you notice weeds growing in your mulch, you should put on more layers and make something like a lasagna of mulch and newspaper. Not only will this help stop weeds but it will decompose eventually so that your soil is nourished.
2. Old Carpet Samples and Shower Curtains
When you spread these items in between rows or on the garden path, it will help keep weeds from growing. Then cover them with mulch.
3. Corn Gluten
This meal is a corn byproduct and it will stop the seeds from becoming weeds. Because the meal is going to stop germination, put it around plants that are established. After you’ve harvested, spread this meal so that you’re preventing weeds in the late season.
4. Vinegar
Acetic acid which 5% vinegar contains what is known as a desiccant. This means that it will take the life from plant leaves. It’s very destructive to young plants that have immature roots, even though it will just roll off of the weeds that have waxy leaves such as thistle or pennywort.
Be careful to cover over the plants that you want to save because it will kill good plants, too. A good way to do to this is by removing the bottom from a two-liter bottle and putting the bottle on top of the weed. Then spray your vinegar right into the bottle’s mouth. This will make sure that the vinegar only gets on the weeds.
5. Vodka
Vodka isn’t just for drinking anymore. It can even kill weeds. Put an ounce of vodka into two cups of water and a drop or two dish soap. This is going to dry out the weeds that love the sun. Make sure that you are also protecting the plants you want to save since they’ll also be dried out.
6. Soap
There is oil and soap and this is able to break down hairy or waxy weed surfaces. This will make the weeds desiccant vulnerable. So put a couple dish detergent drops into a vodka or vinegar spray so that the solution is kept on the leaves. It also will make the leaves shiny, so you know where you’ve sprayed.
7. Boiling Water
Boiling water is another great way that you can kill weeds. Once you pour the boiling water on the weeds, they’ll burn up. Boiling water’s a great way to do it when you have walkway and driveway weeds, since it will cool as it runs off and your border plants won’t be affected.
These are the things that you can do to help get rid of weeds without having any poisons on your plants. They are simple ways that you can get rid of the weeds and help your property look beautiful and weed free.
